Way to Kuala Selangor

Kuala Selangor is a coastal district, south-west of Kuala Lumpur.  It is also the name of the principal town in that vicinity

Here are 2 simplified sketches - both showing the same place. Since I have them -let's hope that at least one will more sense to you than the other.

The one on the left should show you the location of Kuala Selangor town  vis-à-vis Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur.

This lower sketch now on the right, will show more of the details relating to the inland route that runs from Petaling Jaya to the "Fireflies" town

There is yet a 3rd sketch on another site on "Firefly"  watching that has some reference relating "destinations" . That is - if you still need more details -Log on to my main site.

See Bulletin now

Those of you driving your own vehicle - there is an option of choosing one of the 2 routes to reach Kuala Selangor from Kuala Lumpur.

Route 1  - The Inland route [1] Out of  Petaling Jaya via the NKVE moving north and exit through [2] Sungei Buloh township. Straight on using Highway 54 - that branches and ends at Highway 5 in Kuala Selangor town.

Here are some pictures with more details to show you scenes along the way

[1a] From KL or Kepong or the Highway No.1, you will move into the Middle Ring Road. This dual carriageway will ends at the last  junction, a couple of kilometers after the Sri Damansara turnpike. i.e. Continuing straight, this dual carriage way ends at the turnpike with the NKVE.

[1b] Then alternatively from PJ, on the NKVE itself, or when  you are traveling along the Expressway, this should be the type of signage you should meet up with.

This is the signage for exit No. 113. Whether you are coming from the north or south, the signage is common.

This particular board where the picture is taken is at Kilometer 457.6

Watch this reading that appears every 100 meter. You will not miss the Exit No. 113

Both sub-alternatives [1a] & [1b] will meet at the Sg. Buloh traffic lights. From this point, continue straight on the same direction, after the end of the dual carriageway, you are already on Highway No 54. Meaning, follow this normal road to Kuala Selangor/ Batang Berjuntai.

No need to feel like an alien, the road number [54] as seen here, appears in most road sign. The road is broad and fairly straight in most part. There is only one portion marked by the presence of an Indian temple amidst an Palm Estate that has 6 very sharp bends over a distance of 1.5 kilometers. After this stretch is the Ijok township, a small settlement with insignificant town center.

Next major decision is at Ijok.  But by then, you would encounter very obvious signs like this type on the right.

Similar board at Ijok will show that you are only 17 kilometers away from Kuala Selangor.

Keep left as the main road goes and head for Kuala Selangor. The road is now dead straight for the rest of the journey. Still along the straight road to Kuala Selangor, there is  small "T" junction in the next settlement area - marked  Bukit Rotan.

You could or more likely take this right turn at this junction to head for Kampong Kuantan. It is at the end of this 4 kilometer road. Along this road, there is a Golf course,  very straight but narrower road with oil palm trees on both side to reach Kampong Kuantan

Happy driving.

Route  2- the Coastal Way - [1] Petaling Jaya west on the NKVE Expressway to last toll house in Klang town - . This will be a convenient continuation if you are traveling all the while from the south using the coastal Highway.

[2] After leaving Kang town, head north with Kapar as the next destination.

at last [3] onto Highway 5, that passes straight through into Kuala Selangor. But first, you will pass through a small township Jeram and then another market town named "Sungei Buloh". Do not be alarmed, this is not the same "Sungei Buloh" as the one near to PJ, but with another town with the same name but added and differentiated by the word "Kampong".

Proceed as normal, straight on. Another 12 kilometers later, the main road lead straight pass Kuala Selangor town and north. No other turning needed if you are going north. This way is not preferred by me as it passes through some dense populated area. More details.

Now some views as to how the roads there and  how the road signs are like

The tale end of the Expressway at its most western point. From this last toll house, the overhead signage directs traffic to turn into Klang town in 2 lanes.
Choose the lane on the right, i.e. the one that continue towards the port. A short distance from this signage there will be the next viaduct, with the underpass after a right turn heading north to Kuala Selangor. The first underpass, this road will first head for the town of Meru and thereafter Kapar. Recommend that you follow this road!

Watch the signage in the [top] right . Now 2 destinations-  Klang and Meru which are district in opposite direction but both denoted by arrows that point towards the left. This is because the "fork-junction" is at the base of this left turn-off, there the  2 separate...

After this underpass, still along the main road to the port, the 2nd junction and next junction  is not an underpass but a cross road. A right turn will take you straight to Kapar.

Choosing the either junctions, the 1st underpass or 2nd cross road,  the roads continuing from there will lead to Kapar town. My experiences showed that it will be an "easier" traffic flow to Kapar via Meru. This road too, is also a crowded road. On this road, the scene is that of rubber trees followed by Palm oil estates. Towards the end of the stretch, an industrial area thrives, bringing along with it traffic congestion at least 2 spots.

Traffic congestion [1]  shown by this frame at the Meru town centre. This is an cross-road township. In it, there should be the start of a road to Kapar town. But- there is no signage to prompt you.

One hint though, watch the double storey wooden shop lots on the right. the correct junction is the one on the opposite side. From here, Kapar town is 8 kilometers away at the end of the road. So take that left turn, follow where the main stream of traffic will flow. Just for information, those going straight are heading for Bukit Cherakah.

Traffic congestion.[2] This road to Kapar starts with a jam and also ends with another. This is the view of the poorly planned looped junction to enter Kapar. From this junction a  turn will put you on Route 5, i.e. right turn to go north.

Thanks goodness -this is now thing of the past, a revised junction has straightened routing at least for those heading north.

Again don't expect any signage to guide you, there is no none. Just follow the queue to turn right , the volume of travelers is where everybody heading for - Kuala Selangor! Left turn? -  going back to Klang where the 2nd cross road is.

The coastal Federal Route 5 from here will pass through Jeram, a small town famous for its vegetarian dumplings. Coming up next -  [Kuala Kampong] Sungei Buloh where locals buy fresh fishes. Next! -  Assam Java is the junction town where a right turn returns you to Kuala Lumpur via Sungei Buloh [Leprosarium]. But continuing straight and at last you are in Kuala Selangor!

Way to Kampong Kuantan   Kuala Selangor is fast becoming a touristy destination.

Tourists particularly, foreigners have visited this town for one reason or another.

The attraction started by the Fireflies Park is an important agenda in the Malaysian tourist industry. The State Government had not spared any efforts to have this signboards erected on all major roads approaching the Kuala Selangor District.

The sightings of numerous billboards and road signs is a reassuring gesture. Constantly comforting drivers that they are on the right way & that the end of the journey is not far away.!

To Kampong Kuantan, more options. Do not get confused by the many options -they are mere elaborations. The routes are in a rectangular pattern.

[1] If you are approaching Kuala Selangor from Klang town, there will be a "T" junction at a small settlement "Kampong Assam Java". To break away from the Main Road, the signboard says to "Kuala Lumpur". Take this right turn and proceed a short distance [10 kilometers] to Bukit Rotan. Another "T" junction - From there signs will direct you to make a left turn to your final destination - Kampong Kuantan.

At this same "T" junction, you  will joined by other motorist who are arriving from Petaling Jaya via Sungei Buloh [north].

Or [2]  You may choose not to turn yet at Assam Java - continue your journey straight, there is yet another junction a kilometer down the road. Taking the 2nd right turn here will put right on the way to Kampong Kuantan with no further turning.   A matter of personal choice, traffic on the former is easier, a lonely road through a golf course and palm oil plantation.

This is a sample of that dedicated sign. More of them as you get closer to Kampong Kuantan.

You can see it by day, at night it is unfortunately not lighted. The area has to be kept dim to avoid disturbances to the fireflies habitats.

Don't be shocked to find that you are among huge crowd. The place is usually packed with tours buses and vans, particularly on weekends..

More sample of sign board.

The way to the new Fireflies watching destination in Kampong Belimbing is not shown here. To reach this destination, across the Sungei Selangor River, go another 3 kilometers after the town of Kuala Selangor on Highway 5,  Turn the next junction on the right . Move along a village road to go "upstream" for another 5 kilometers.

This resort area is a more developed site and with full facilities of Sea-food and Chalets. However from experiences, most passengers after being ferried for over an hour in darkness from PJ, prefer not to wait another long stretch of road. They would like to quit traveling for a while and settled for the nearest destination. {See 2nd  Sketch on top}

For those having Sea-food dinner in Pasir Penampang, the Kampong Kuantan destination is along the way back to Kuala Lumpur.
