Kuala Selangor Seafood Restaurants

Kuala Selangor is very much associated with seafood by virtue of its proximity with the sea. Perhaps many is unaware that there were more restaurants than those that meet the eyes in this little settlement. In this page, I have listed the restuarants in 2 segments. [1] One that you see and [2] another group that do not get spotted instantly.

Seafood in Kuala Selangor

Let's us get acquainted with the place!

There is the Kuala Selangor town - on the lower side of the river as the map refers. The squarely marked area is the "new" town. It is the administrative center and bus stands.

Upon arrival in Kuala Selangor, motorist will pass the new township first, marked on the map as a red square. Following the Main Road and around a bend at the traffic lights is the original Kuala Selangor town. There were eateries in this old part of town as well. Cross the beautiful and long bridge to get to Pasir Penambang. This is now a  settlement for fishermen and fish farmers. I will talk about these clusters of Seafood restaurants, when the topic of seafood in Kuala Selangor is mentioned . Most of them are non-halal.

The main activities in this area

Sea-food restaurants and icon  in Pasir Penambang.

The fishermen deliver their catches fresh.

Focusing  - These "clusters" on Pasir Penambang? They can be distinctly classifies as in 2 seperate locations.

A. On the Main Street of the settlement

B. In converted private homes along Riverfront.

The text to follow is prepared according to this geographical region.

The Main Street of Kampong Penambang

The settlement consist of a single "L" shaped street. One that leads from the coastal trunk road, right into the riverside jetty points. The other part of this "L" bends to move alongside the river bank. There were more dedicated jetties. the front of which were retail shops and stalls handling cottage industries offering marine-based produces.

Getting to Kampong Penambang

To reach the junction turning into "town", take note. After the Selangor River bridge, on the right is a neglected Palm Oil estate. On the left approaching very soonwas the JPJ station. There is a turn off to move into the village. Ignore this slip road.

Coming up next - a Caltex Petrol station. Be ready to slow down for a left turn some 100 meters ahead.

N.B. At present, this ring road serving the settlement and running by the river side has made a complete loop. It re-joined the main Trunk road just before the Road Transport weigh bridge.

To illustrate graphically, location and names of Restaurants available in this stretch are denoted by a number. Their names are shown against each number.

1. Kim Seng 2. Mei Mei 3. Tian Wei Tian
4. Her Choon 5.Kwan Loong 6. Sin Hai Peng
7. Sin Heng Oon 8. Kuala Sungei 9. River View

A view of the this Main Street, taken from a mid point along the road and facing the river side.

On the left, restaurants 6 & 7 last one No. 8, then on the right No.9

Very soon that myths was transformed into reality. More fishermen and their friends were cashing this selling point. For those who had not visited the town for quite a while will be surprised to see most coffee shops transformed into Seafood Restaurants, alongside that old restaurant in Pasir Penambang.

So much about the place and now the restaurants.

Part 1 - A quick run-through of the restaurants in "town along the approach road"

Kim Seng Seafood

This Restaurant is strategically located at the junction. On the main road, just  turning into Kampong Penambang. A view from the Main Road, many would have mistaken it to be "the" Seafood restaurant that every one is talking about.

As you can see, the crowd is not too bad.

Both this Mei Mei & Kim Seng are beside one another. On Monday, when there is a night market, most diners would not like to go through the crowded street. They will choose one of these two.

Mei Mei Seafood Steamboat

This restaurant is one of those catering for simple version of seafood steamboat. Hence business is usually in the evening. For lunch the restaurant is closed. Just across the road another shop lot without an operating name yet had commenced business. It is for steamboat lunch on Sunday.

Tian Wai Tian Seafood Stall

This is coffee shop style restaurant serving food for the locals. They cater for local wedding parties and can prepare good, tasty meals. That is what they have ventured into. Serving good seafood as well.

House specialty are simple home recipe food at unbelievable competitive rates.

Her Choon Seafood Restaurant

Please E-Mail me your comments as I have yet to try out  this new establishment

Kwan Loong Seafood Restaurant

This is a nicely painted shop lot. Cannot remember its existence or perhaps it looked unattractive the last time we saw it. It is located in the middle of a row of shop lot towards the end of town- The busy part! Well patronized

Sin Hai Peng & Sin Hong Oon Seafood Restaurants

This two coffee shop style restaurants are very popular with out of town guests. For those coming over to Kuala Selangor for good food and money for value, would avoid places with good views. Instead, settle for the food itself, reasons for their trip.

So it is proven and also well accepted

Kuala Sungai Seafood Restaurant

This is yet another shop just separated by one shop from the twin contemporaries. Same story, they all cater for regulars coming over for a weekend meals with no frills.

This is the corner and the last shop for that solitary row of shops. In front and around it are vendors selling dried food stuff. Suppose it gets some traffic from waiting husbands as well.

River View Seafood Restaurant

What appears to be an anchor outlets occupies the most vantage slots. First shop by the river, strategically protruding to offer panoramic views of the other outlets and activities at the banks of the river.

Example of some of the views:-

By day, view of the Melawati Hills and by night that beautiful lighthouse blinking to far away ships.

Scenes at the many jetties unloading catches from the sea. The building next to it is always occupied with activities of the cockle's trade.

The bridge spanning across the Selangor River

Food is good at fair prices. If you have some one to impress, then this place is a good outing destination

The Riverside Restaurants

Off the soon crowded Main Street, residents over the years had extended the town with stilt houses built and lining up the river banks. It was not difficult to understand. There already had a bund as part of the reclamation project. This bund was paved and used as a road. Houses were built on stilt.

The bund is sensitive to heavy load, meant for the  light motor cycles. Residents with cars and those visiting the restaurants  drive on an unpaved track through the Palm Oil estate.

To reach Riverside Restauarnts

Once on the Main street, there are 2 rows of shophouses on both sides. Rather short rows. The left flank will end up with a Chinese Temple inside an individual compound while the right side will begins with the edge of the Palm Oil estate.

Amidst the estate, just directly opposite the Chinese temple, is this access road into the estates. You cannot go wrong as the hoard of signboards confirms your findings.
Just a view of the track inside the Estate. The first junction turning left will take you to Restaurants No. 1 & 2. From there you can continue on the paved road , or don't turn up. Continue on the dirt track to reach the second left turning to Restaurants 3 &4.

To assure those not so confident in going off road, here is a special view. Even in the night with no street lights, the road surface is fairly even,

In this areas, the restaurants started bussiness using existing stilt houses. As the bussiness expanded, proper and new buildings were installed to replace the residential type outfits.

You can even park your car in the Palm Oil Estate. That is when the narrow road next to the restaurants are filled.

Location and names of Restaurants available in this stretch are denoted by a number. Click against the slot below to open a full view of the establishments. Some of them are supplied with comments that we had laid our hands on!

If you are still pondering about the green streak shown on the sketch above! This is the canal.

Part 2 - The restaurants along the  "bund" individually in more details

Pertama Seafood Restaurant

This is the guy who have put up signage all along the way to bring visitors to their shop.

This restaurant can be considered to be he most spacious, meaning having enough space to host large dinner seating. From the picture below, it can be seen that most part of the building is inside the river bed, giving visitors a good river view.

Having your food and seeing fishing boats passing by. Then the Mangrove forest on the opposite bank, the mudflats with mudskippers and some birds

That is a private jetty in the foreground! The building stretches equally out into the water.

Also a good place to watch the sun setting!

They all serve the same style of cooking. Larger establishment obviously find it hard to compete in prices with those smaller outlets, especially many of them here are operating from buildings that used to be private houses

?? Seafood Restaurant

Excuse me! Can't remember the proper name of this requalr place of mine.

If you are looking for good ambience, setting and better pricing, then this restaurant is acknowledged by many. Perhaps the lavish car park has something to do with attracting the crowd. My favorite here is the fried "Glass Noddles" From the many feedback, serving and prices may not be that consistent.

For those going for early lunch, they may get to see, the operator sorting out cockles for delivery to the market.
Looking back from an annex, dinning area here is well exposed. Good view all round and cool sea breeze, when there is one blowing.

Definitely a nice place to be without burning a hole in the pocket. Avoid weekends, it is really packed.

Kou Yun Hock Seafood Restaurant

This establishment had extended the hall and the patio to make available a large space for a dinning hall.

Sungai Yu Seafood Restaurant

This is the latest establishment to jump on the bandwagon. An outlet without sea view, no frills and ordinary house extended to provide a large seating hall.

Food served was tasty and we specially loved the fish chips in salted Soya beans.

Prices are very attractive, no wonder that on the couple of occasions we were there - for lunch and dinner, the place is filled with locals. Hope the food and the prices stay that way!
