Pangkor Island

Enjoy the Ferry ride

The island of Pangkor is on the West coast of Peninsula, some 85 kilometers south- west of the state capital of Ipoh

Pulau Pangkor is separated from the mainland by the Dindings Channel. This is the view of the estuary and the head land of the island, seen as the left side.
This is the profile of the entire island. Pangkor town seen as the left edge is in the southern part of the island. The white dots are the fishing settlements located on the western leeward side facing the mainland.

Can be visible from the Mainland

Ferry boats depart from a jetty at the original part of Lumut town itself. Here is a scene of the spruced up sleepy town's main street.

For those who have not been to the place in years, would find the town they once knew had changed beyond recognition.

With the important role played by naval base and more industrialization, the whole vicinity has many new buildings.

The boat ride including the stop over takes 40 minutes. Stopping over in Sungei Pinang Kechil first and the second and last stop, Pangkor. For those who had booked with the Pan-Pacific Hotel, please check with the ticket counter.

The Naval base which the hub of Lumut for years continues to play its vital role.

The channel is shallow but with very powerful current. Its mid point was marked by this lighthouse.

Normal passenger boats making the journey to Pangkor will charged Rm 4.

You could break your journey using the same ticket

Another new scene was added not so long ago. Across the Lumut River, there is now this new Damar Laut Resort. It can easily be reached by crossing the river using the new bridge. This you will see from the ferry.

There were 6 of such passenger boats used. Lately an air-conditioned fleet is put into service.

These new boats with no stop over traveling direct from Lumut to Pangkor takes 30 minutes. Fare is now appropriately increased to RM6 return.

Most Chinese staying in Manjong district or in Sitiawan belong to a Chinese clan named  Fook Chow!

Not surprising then that residents all have quite identical sounding surnames.

Here we were amused that the proprietor for the ferry company's was named "Ding Kong Ling". Reason - Ding and Ling, the sounds from both are surnames to most of the folks.

It was a short a pleasant ride within a calm channel - so need not have any concern of sea sickness!

Alternatively, for many, even such a holiday means having to fight for time, especially the journey from Kuala Lumpur by road takes 3 hours.

There is an air strip that caters for the daily flights. But to fly here means,  you gonna miss the old fashion and relaxed way of making a good holiday

It is very easy to reach Pangkor. All you need is time!
