Pangkor Island

Towns around the Island

The largest congregation of activities is around Sungei Pinang Kechil and not Pangkor town.

Picture show settlement at the northern cape.

Without defining the size of population to qualify a township, in Pangkor Island there are 3 distinct townships and 4 settlement areas. These small settlements here are referred as villages in local language "Kampong". With the exception of Kampong Teluk Nipah that is located on the west coast, 6 of them were on the island's eastern side facing the calmer waters of the channel.

The town with most activities will the first arrival point, Kampong Sungei Pinang Kechil.

Here, the fishing industry sent out its produce and received the much needed supply from the main land

The urban areas in Pangkor looked exciting. Narrow streets with few vehicular traffic. If there are - it is  dominated by 2 wheelers.

A typical scene -deserted streets at most times.

A rare opportunity to come across a township with plenty of wooden structures. That is the style of the past, though they are still were a fire hazard.
Here what a sight of a frontier town.

Shops dealing with industrial supply are concentrated around  the vicinity of the pier.

If you watch carefully, you could see the road sign indicating a winding stretch. This signage posted along the one and only thoroughfare would the Ring Road winding round around the island.
On this eastern stretch, the road hugging alongside the steep hill slope that almost ends up at sea.

This rocky outcrop cuts Sungei Pinang Kechil town from the next town Sungei Besar [Major]

Motor Cycles being the chief mode of transport were used by those staying in the outlaying portions to reach the ferry terminal.

Sheltered parking provided by the Ferry Company to customers with while they are away on the mainland

Sungei Pinang Besar is a residential area as well as maintenance depot for the fishing fleets. Though small, it is a self sufficient township. For example, you may spot an unusual looking Fuel Dispensing Station serving motor bike users with small purchases.

Sungei Pinang Besar had grown.

Even though the outcrop is precarious, more buildings had encroached the sloped shoreline. Sometimes its boundary with Pangkor town is non existence.

As if it was by design, Pangkor town served the commercial needs of the visitors and residents.

Business here are sundries, general goods with commercial houses and Banks.

In Pangkor town, unlike building design of the 2 Sungei Pinangs,  the structures here of contemporary designs of the mainland and the road has less gradient. Off course the souvenirs shops are here too!
