Bera is one of the two major natural water bodies
of freshwater in Peninsula Malaysia.. It supports
a biological community which is unique within the
country and probably the only place on earth! The lake has a high ecological
diversity and home to many endangered and endemic
species of plants and animals. Therefore can be considered as of great importance as a gene pool
besides being of interest from a scientific, recreational, educational
and economic point of
view.
Malaysia's first
Ramsar site, the lake together with its
associated marshes and interspersed with
extensive areas of reeds, freshwater and peat
swamp forests, encompass an area estimated at
6,150ha. Water from a catchment's area of 61,383ha
feed this swamp.
